Daemon Prince: Warren Gatland

From the depths of the Warp, comes the mighty Daemon Prince, Warren Gatland! Created during a bloody Rugby match between Wales and Italy and named after the victorious Welsh team head coach!

Here to bring in an age of terror on the table top.

I began work on this model on a quite weekend when the rugby was on, just before the game started I began painting and managing to finish the model just after.

Now before you get that question of "Why hasn't he got wings?", I need to mention that this was a cheap eBay buy I found and couldn't pass up. In the future I'm going to look into getting some wings on this bad boy, which is why I haven't gone back and improved the paint job on him.

Chaos Space Marines: Troops

The core of any Warhammer 40k army are troops, and here are my bunch of unsavoury individuals.

Each of my units contains an aspiring champion, along with options for heavy support. Included with these guys is a heavy bolter, flamer and plasma gun.

I've used some Chosen from DV to represent the Aspiring Champions as I'm not into using Chosen as actual units (which I'll explain in another post).

This flag bearer is a classic model from around 1985 (according to the slot).

Further down the line I'm going to be bringing in a Havoc squad where I'll be able to change the makeup of the heavy support around for both the troops and the Havocs.

One thing which I feel is a shame is the lighting, as it has made the golden shade on the armour appear a brass like.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy!

Chaos Lord: Dave the Unpleasant

Here he is, the HQ for my band of heretics:

Kranon the Relentless's eviler twin brother "Dave the Unpleasant".

In regards to this model, I'm a massive fan of the helmet (even if the horns remind me of rabbit ears), and his wailing sword.
Although I think I could improve a bit with the shoulder pads, I'm happy enough for now with the outcome of this piece until a later a date.

The armor was a bit tricky, as this is the first time I've done the trimmings on the Space Marine armor, but practice makes perfect. Hindsight I should have painted in pieces and then assembled but I was too inpatient when I opened the box (this goes for all the DV set).

Just like my cultists, he's based on some sort of wasteland, which I'm going to be keeping as a running theme throughout my models.

Sneak peak

After having a fight getting twitter feeds working today (account was blocked from tweeting as it didn't think the tweets were me) I'm doing a final test post with a sneak peak of an upcoming model

Black Legion: Paint It Black

And my Chaos Space Marine legion of choice is....

"I see a red door and I want it painted black."

So what are the reasons for choosing these heretics:
  • ALL THE GODS! - Unlike a lot of the original CSM legions, such as World Eaters, the Black Legion have access to all the Gods of Chaos. Instead of worshiping just one of the Chaos Gods (which isn't very chaotic), the Black Legion worship all as a whole. This allows them to benefit from all of the types of units and keep within the lore (which I'm a sucker for doing).
  • Books - A little while after getting back into WH40K I picked up a few of the Horus Heresy books and loved the fall of Horus to Chaos. Although technically Word Bearers would be the first to have fallen to Chaos, the Luna Wolves (eventually Black Legion) struck me as an inspiring legion to go for.
  • Abandon - The guy is massive and has a cool sword. Enough said there.
I suppose they aren't the most original when it comes to choosing CSM, pretty basic colours (not far off just a base coat) and probably one of the most "go to" for newbies, but that's what I am.

When my painting skills start to pick up, I'll start taking on other challenges with harder models and armies.

Until then, over the coming months expect to see a lot more of these heretics!

Dark Vengeance: Review

Just to get this out there. My experience with Warhammer 40K, or any table top game for that matter is null.

Purchasing Dark Vengeance was quite an investment, costing £70. It felt like a gamble, as if I didn't like it then I've blown all that cash. However as I used to collect a few models a few (13) years back, I felt pretty confident in buying it.

What made me get this box set over other starter army sets is that it included models, introduction guides and the tools needed to play.

Included in the set are the following items:
  • How to play quick start booklet 48 pages
  • Abbreviated rulebook- 168 pages
  • Assembly guide- 15 pages
  • Reference sheet
  • Template set with dice pack and range finders
  • 28 Chaos minis: 1 Chaos Lord, 6 Chosen, 1 Helbrute, 20 Chaos Cultists
  • 20 Dark Angels: 1 Company Master, 1 Librarian, 5 Terminators, 10 Marines, 3 Bikes
  • Base pack
As someone who used to collect CSM, all these new models were right up my street and began my submersion back into WH40K.

From a beginners point of view, it's an expensive start. If your experience in this sort of thing is limited it can be overwhelming to buy this box set. It is a good way to get into the game, as this whole set saves you a good £100 if you do take up the hobby.

You get a starting ground to build an army, it may not be a massive one but big enough to enjoy some games with.

I've suggested it to a few people who are interested in playing as its value for money is brilliant unless it turns out to not be your cup of tea.

Very glad with the purchase and hope you enjoy the up coming models.

Chaos Cultists: Meat shields of the 41th Millennium

First out of my Dark Vengeance box, and first to get blasted with the spray can.

MEAT SHIELDS. Weak bullet fodder.

These are the first models that I've completed from scratch (in ten years) and even they suffer the spray can for a second attempt.

Luckily there aren't any photos of the first paint job, so this shame is well hidden.

Other than playing the standard games which come as part of the box set, I haven't used these guys in a proper game yet.

Cheaper than normal CSM, so you can swam your opponent with them, but these poor wretches are nothing better than meat shields.

I did find use for them when playing the "Helfire Stone" scenario included in Dark Vengeance.

By using them as a shield for the Helbrute who was the one grabbing the relic, they came in use and helped win the game.

Now that my understanding of the rules has improved (not by much, forgive me), it turns out that only troop units can pick up relics. So after what use I did find, it turns out I wasn't playing fair.

As far as colours goes, I hadn't decided on what legion I wanted for my Chaos Space Marines when I started these. Using separate colours schemes for each of the units, I went for a lore approach. Being cultists, they'd have jumped alongside any CSM on their planet, so match colours didn't matter.

Enjoy!
